Balenciaga Pre-Fall GENIUS

Every season there comes a collection that absolutely blows our minds. I'm talking, MELT YOUR FACE OFF. Nicolas Ghesquiere has completely outdone himself for Fall 09. Voluminous shapes, layered over-sized jackets, skinny drop crotch style pants, towering platform booties, *gasp platform FLAT boots, FUR ACCOUTERMENTS!! Heaven would be everyone dressed like this (minus the fur 'cuz that's just wrong).

Eh hem, harem

While everyone thought the drop crotch would come and go like last year's boyfriend, we always knew it'd be around for everyone to enjoy just a little longer. Prada did a chino drop crotch in 07, Henrik Vibskov with the infamous drop crotch shorts in 08, and the harem pant in 09, for everyone to take a stab at. It's old news, really, but new news for those that have yet to try it out. Easily mistaken for poop in your pants, please don't attempt unless you have skinny legs. YOW!

Fall 09 has already engulfed us, before the New Year has even begun. This is the eternal problem with fashion. Always looking so far into the future makes you utterly bored with the present. As we've seemed to have left our time warp machine in another jacket pocket, we can't yet purchase any specific items, but we CAN look forward to these easily replicated trends...

The Ladies of MiniMarket

While Fall is still in full swing, and we haven't even begun our holiday shopping, let's keep motivated by what's to come for next season. Afterall, we don't want to waste our energy on mindless articles that won't be valid next season. It's quite easy to entrust your closet (and money) with the ladies pictured here. Sisters Sofie, Pernilla and Jennifer Elvestadt have it under control.

The inspiration for SS09 derives from dark versions of Disney characters torn apart and pieced together with each other. The color scale includes midnight blue with bright red, bright green and electric blue. No more wimpy colors! It's all about cottons and silks, including an everlasting silk that won't disintegrate over time. So you can pass it to your baby's baby's baby's. The patterns are dominated by blurry dots and multi colored stripes. The shapes are square, boxy, and poofed. Lovely.

iPod into Jewelry

Who said the iPod couldn't get better? Designer Gopinath Prasana has envisioned the future of everyone's favorite music accessory, and designed it into a bracelet. Made of aluminum, and equipped with music controls, a track pad, and most importantly, an air inflated fit system to ensure the thing doesn't slip off your wrist. C'mon! We think this thing is a bust, UNLESS, they do a collabo with Cartier and have it laced in pave diamonds. Aluminum? No way, how about white gold. And to top it off, make matching earrings that double as the wireless ear bud. This is genius.

Comme des Garcons for the masses

While almost every high-street, designer collaboration of late has been quite the disappointment, we are finally excited to see the launch of one of the most unexpected ones yet. Rei Kawakubo, best know for her directional and very aggressive collections, is a design genius. Whether or not the range will be uncompromised by the diffusion prices, and the overly commercial audience, is yet to be seen. We can't imagine the average H&M shopper fully appreciating Kawakubo's 40 years of experience. However, it's a push in the right direction. The level of sophistication in design is unparalleled, and any exposure to those that haven't had the pleasure of enjoying it will finally have the chance. It's already available in Tokyo, but tomorrow, it's for us in the states to judge.

WODE by BOUDICCA

Perhaps one of the most "interesting" scents to hit the market in more recent history is WODE by BOUDICCA. Garnishing its name from Queen Boudicca who led a tribal uprising against the occupation of the Roman Empire, the Queen was most imfamous for the blue war paint her army was disguised in.
The modern day homage to the Queen comes in the form of WODE. When sprayed, a vibrant cobalt mist is released on the skin and clothing. In seconds, WODE fades completely and only leaves the scent behind.
And apparently, part of the ad campaign includes using a certain "war paint" on city property. Brilliant. Have perfume that stains your clothes and also graffiti on the side of your house to remind you of it.

The New York based fashion/culture/arts blog WORSHIP WORTHY is on our most read list. We love what these ladies stand for and also their eccentric perspective on all things unique. Although the editorial is very New York centric, so are most good things about fashion. Thus, a branch off into their own signature line is appropriate. For Holiday, the Worship Worthy ladies are making their digs available to you. Check out just a bit of what's to come...

WOWch!

What do fans of Flight of the Conchords, sleazy truck drivers and kids from the Mission have in common? They all have mustaches (even the women) and they also wear WOWCH.


WOWCH is a Brooklyn based design company specializing in conceptual t-shirts since 2003. Their graphics put a sardonic spin on sweet furry things and twist nature into cartoonish nightmares. With only 4 seasons under their belts and little support from the mainstream press, they've gained quite a large underground following all around the world.

When not working on their line, the two artists, Max Cattaneo and Matt Shankman, have had the pleasure of designing exclusive graphics for cool rock bands such as The Rapture, Beck, Tenacious D, Outhud, Vhs or Beta, and DFA Records to name a few. And on top of all that, their frequent New York City parties have become an institution amongst the beautiful, the boisterous, and the buffoons.

Deadly Ponies

So you want to hear about New Zealand Fashion Week, eh? Well NZ is a great place to visit, see some sights, meet some really great people...but the fashion is pretty sloooooooow. And just when we thought we may leave empty handed, we spotted one accessories line to die for.

Deadly Ponies, from the collective brains of Liam Bowden and Katie Smith, connect well sculpted bags with pebbled leathers and exposed zippers to create wearable yet unforgettable pieces. Alongside bone and skeleton pendants, snake detailed rings, and of course dead pony legs, the jewelry pieces are also not to be overlooked...

The show included handbags set up in a science lab, hanging from old lab racks or sitting atop iodine jars. The jewelry came out, catwalk style, carried by zombie looking models, on plates with scattered body parts. Genius!
